A Brief History of the Kia K5
The Kia K5 sedan was introduced in 2021 as a replacement for the Optima. The move was a part of the Korean automaker's efforts to streamline its nameplates. The Kia Stinger hatchback inspired the K5's exterior design. It has an edgier and more modern look than the Optima.
The new sedan also featured larger screens inside. These included an available 12.3-inch TFT screen that served as a replacement for physical instrument panel gauges and a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system on select trim levels.
The K5 was offered in five trim levels: LX, EX, LXS, GT, and GT-Line. Unlike the Optima, the K5 did not offer hybrid or plug-in hybrid variants. But it did have an engine lineup that was more similar to the Sonata.
Most K5s had a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The K5 GT, on the other hand, came with a 290-horsepower, 2.5-liter turbo-four, and an eight-speed dual-clutch automated transmission. The K5 also offered all-wheel-drive on LXS and GT-Line models. This option made the K5 competitive with rivals like the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry that offered AWD with their base engines.
For the 2022 model year, the K5 received some additional equipment on certain trim levels and the new Kia logo. GT and EX models also got a surround-view camera.
