There are a lot of myths about what does and doesn’t affect your car insurance rates. For instance, if you buy a red car, will your insurance rate go up? Turns out red cars don’t cost more on your insurance and neither do white cars. So since the color of your vehicle doesn’t affect your insurance premium, what does and how can you save money? We’ve done a little research and gathered a few tips you can follow to lower your insurance rates.

What Factors Affect Your Insurance Rate?

Your insurance rate is calculated using a few different factors. Some of the factors that influence your insurance rates are completely out of your control while others are influenced by your habits. For instance, insurance companies take your driving record into account when they decide how much your insurance rates should be. So, if you have several accidents, speeding tickets, or other traffic violations, your insurance will cost more. The age of the driver is one of the things that only time can change, but drivers under 25 will have higher insurance rates as well.  Other factors that will affect your rates include:

  • Location
  • Type of vehicle
  • Annual mileage
  • Marital status (married drivers will pay a little less than single drivers)
  • Credit score
  • Gender

How Can You Lower Your Car Insurance Premium?

If you want to lower the monthly cost of your insurance, there are several things you can do. Over time, improving your driving record will eventually lower your insurance rates, but in the immediate future, you can take a few steps to find the best rate available to you. The first thing you can do is adjust your deductible. Increasing your deductible will lower your monthly insurance rate but this may not be the best course of action for your situation. If you have an accident you will have to cover more of the damage before your insurance kicks in. Another way to lower your insurance costs is to evaluate everything included in your insurance. Does your policy include add-ons like roadside assistance or rental car coverage? If you don’t need these services you can remove them from your policy to lower your rates.

Additional Insurance Shopping Tips

After you’ve found a deductible you are willing to live with and narrowed down the list of services you want in your insurance policy, make sure to shop around and compare prices. Don’t accept the first policy you find. Hunt for discounts as well. Most insurance companies offer discounts for bundling your home, life, and car insurance policies.
